Scene: Leaving the cinema

Me:  "So, do you think Heath Ledger's going to get a posthumous Oscar?"

My younger brother:  "...I would be surprised if they nominated anyone else.  I mean."

Can Oscars be awarded posthumously? It would be awesome, but it might be against the rules somehow.

Yes, what's-his-name was posthumously nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for Il Postino a while back. *checks* Massimo Troissi, that was it. I actually had a vague memory of him winning and someone accepting the award for him, but apparently I manufactured that.

Wikipedia sez of Troissi:

"He was posthumously nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role, becoming only the sixth actor (after James Dean, Peter Finch, Ralph Richardson, Jeanne Eagels, and Spencer Tracy) to be so honoured."

Ah--and alone of the six, Peter Finch actually won. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Finch)

Ah, cool. It wouldn't surprise me if he did get one, then. But that still won't make up for the way he was absolutely robbed of the Oscar he should have had for Brokeback Mountain.
