*The only problem with 1) was that I also spent twenty minutes being annoyed every time What's-His-Name the Brave Wisecracking Magical Arab said or did anything cool, because I kept thinking about how nice it would be if this were the kind of world where his character got to leave the cave alive for a change.
...that would be so hot! Would Pepper be teamed up with Weir in this scenario for some kind of Earth-imperiling plot-related reason? Because that's straight where I went, where she would be employing her usual awesome Gal Friday powers in a situation of more than usual PERIL, almost like Billy to Weir's Roslin. And everyone underestimates how badass they are and they quietly go about saving the world. (Tony can help. If he promises not to make any threesome jokes.)
