very_improbable: Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect (Default)
Okay, but can I just say about Ilsa Lund? Because I know she's lacking in agency and inconsistently written and all, and according to Umberto Eco she carries no positive values of her own as a character and just winds up being moved around the board in the boys' game of I Can Give Up More Than You--

But you know, while Victor went off to the underground resistance meeting and left her in the hotel room to sit tight? She sneaked out of the hotel without being tailed, sneaked into Rick's closed cafe and indeed broke into his office unnoticed, and just in case good old Rick turned out not to be in a generous mood and it became necessary to threaten him with deadly force, she brought her gun.

(Which, by the way, if you think about it [which you shouldn't, because this movie's plot is thinner than the ozone over the Antarctic], is definitely HER gun--a petite hide-it-in-your-purse number that she's somehow smuggled across various borders--and not Victor's, which I'd assume must be with him if he has one, or Rick's, which we see later on.)

You can't do that and be entirely without moxie, is alls I'm sayin'.
