very_improbable: Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect (Default)
Was reading someone's thoughts on Revenge of the Sith today, a movie I haven't really thought about in years. I was reminded of the fact that when I watched that movie, I felt like there was a considerable amount of Anakin/Palpatine subtext--not that the idea of those characters together is what I would call, you know, appealing, but it seemed to be there nonetheless. Was I the only person who felt that that relationship was pretty slashy?

At the same time--fortunately for everyone--there's no point in the narrative where it would have been logistically reasonable for them to literally have any sort of sexual entanglement, right? I mean, there are two obvious practical issues, one being the limited amount of time they spend alone together before everything gets all crazy, the other being that Anakin's energies are so devoted to Padme-related concerns at all times during the action of the movie that it doesn't make sense for him to get mixed up with anyone else, no matter what seems to be coded in their character dynamic and even if the other person is saying things like, "The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be...unnatural."

(But then, if Ian MacDiarmid were more attractive and/or slash fandom had still cared about the SW prequels by that point, you know none of those trifling concerns would have prevented people from writing it.)
